ONE TEACHER, ONE COMPUTER

ONE TEACHER, ONE COMPUTER

We are actively promoting new and innovative ways of providing better service to the society to meet international practice. With this letter, we would like to propose an initiative called One Teacher, One Computer which we hope would meet the quest of the School’s Administration.

It is no doubt that School doors around the world were closed for several months to contain the spread of COVID-19. In mitigating the effect of school closure, we experienced increased use of technology to support remote learning. By this, the need to utilize technology in preparing lesson contents and facilitating teaching becomes inevitable. However, several challenges in utilizing technology to ensure continuity of learning became manifest as many teachers do not have computers which is a basic and essential tool in facilitating remote teaching and learning.

Because of its far-reaching impact, the COVID-19 pandemic has provided insights into how the role of technology can radically shift to reach students and how to adapt learning processes in challenging times. Digital technology in education enables us to find new answers not only to what people learn but also to how, where and when they learn. In addition, digital technology can help boost the role of teachers. Rather than just communicating knowledge, they can become co-creators of knowledge, coaches, mentors and evaluators.

While digital technology has been instrumental in offering continued access to education over the past months in various depths in some schools, we need to critically ask ourselves this one question: How many teachers have an unrestrictive access to computers during the period?

In our view, over 90% of teachers do not have access to computer and the necessary pedagogical and technical skills to integrate digital technology in education to take up teaching during emergency, especially the online teaching.

Therefore, there is a need to focus on closing such digital divides; where every teacher owns a laptop. This will ensure the provision of equitable and inclusive access to education, as well as provide continuous education as well as good support during an emergency.

Our Proposal

With emerging technologies, the teaching profession must evolve from an emphasis on teacher-centered, lecture-based instruction to student-centered, interactive learning environments.  Designing and implementing successful ICT-enabled teacher education programmes is the key to fundamental, wide-ranging educational reforms that can meet the current new normal.

Care4Cactus Limited is providing a platform to make this possible. The initiative of One teacher, one Computer is to provide an opportunity for every teacher to have a laptop to make teachers capable of tutoring and supporting the knowledge acquiring process with the global context of remote teaching with no hinderance in the period of crisis.
